How It Works

The Surface Becomes the Microphone

Speech creates tiny vibrations in the surrounding structure. The two MANTIS MEMS accelerometers detect those vibrations at the surface and the amplifier converts them into intelligible stereo audio.

Because each sensor has a dedicated channel and balance control, the operator can adjust the left and right inputs independently. Moving or repositioning the sensors can help identify the strongest listening points and provide a better sense of where speech originates relative to the sensor placement.

Sensor Placement

Find the Best Contact Point, Then Fine-Tune Each Channel

Surface coupling is essential. Place each accelerometer firmly against the barrier, listen for the strongest speech energy and compare nearby positions. The independent left and right balance controls allow the operator to compensate for differences between the two contact points.

For longer-duration or covert monitoring, the supplied threaded spikes can secure the accelerometers to suitable wood or metal surfaces. The included hammer adapter supports quick mounting, while an appropriate pilot hole can be prepared in harder compatible materials by trained personnel.

What types of walls can MANTIS listen through?

MANTIS can work through nearly any rigid wall or material capable of carrying vibration, including common drywall, wood, brick and concrete construction. Dense materials such as brick and concrete can provide excellent vibration propagation when the sensor has good surface contact. Wall assemblies, air gaps, insulation, source distance and background vibration still affect results. Typical residential walls are generally less challenging.

Is the audio true stereo?

Yes - and that is one of MANTIS's biggest advantages. The two accelerometers feed separate left and right channels, and each channel has its own balance control. With thoughtful sensor placement, stereo separation can help an operator judge the relative direction of speech or movement behind the surface instead of hearing only a single blended audio channel.

Can MANTIS be used for search and rescue?

Yes. MANTIS is an excellent tactical tool for barricaded-subject, hostage and pre-entry operations, but the same vibration-sensing technology can also help rescue teams listen for people trapped beneath rubble after tornadoes, earthquakes, explosions or structural collapse.
