PIX4D photogrammetry and drone mapping software for public safety, crime scenes and collision reconstruction

Public-Safety Photogrammetry & 3D Mapping

Transform a Scene into Measurable, Reviewable Evidence

PIX4D software turns overlapping drone and ground-level imagery into accurate 2D maps, 3D models, point clouds and other geospatial deliverables for investigations, collision reconstruction, emergency response and tactical planning.

MAXSUR and PIX4D have worked alongside state and federal public-safety teams since 2014, helping pioneer some of the nation’s earliest programmatic drone-based workflows for documenting crime and crash scenes. The objective remains practical: collect a scene efficiently, reopen the area sooner and preserve a detailed digital record that investigators can examine methodically after field operations are complete.

More than a software license: MAXSUR can help an agency select the aircraft, ground-capture tools, mapping targets, positioning equipment, processing workstation, software, training and operating procedures needed to establish a repeatable mapping capability.

Why Photogrammetry for Law Enforcement?

Capture More of the Scene—and Return to It Anytime

Photogrammetry converts ordinary imagery into spatial data. Used with sound capture procedures, appropriate scale and control, and documented quality checks, it gives investigators a powerful way to preserve, measure, analyze and communicate complex scenes.

Drone photogrammetry preserving perishable evidence at a public-safety scene

Preserve Perishable Evidence

Tire marks, debris fields, bloodstains, footprints, cartridge cases and other scene elements can be altered by weather, traffic, responders or time. A properly captured 3D reconstruction preserves the visible scene and the spatial relationships among documented items—even after the physical location has been released.

Law enforcement using drone mapping to document evidence and clear a scene faster

Clear Roads and Scenes Faster

A planned drone flight can document a broad crash site or outdoor scene with hundreds of overlapping images in a short collection window. This can reduce time spent manually measuring every relationship in the roadway, helping agencies restore access sooner while retaining the data needed for later examination.

Three-dimensional crime-scene model used to explain evidence and spatial relationships

Communicate Complex Scenes Clearly

Orthomosaics, 3D models, measured diagrams, point clouds, perspectives and fly-throughs can make a complicated environment easier to understand. Investigators, prosecutors, command staff and other authorized stakeholders can review the same spatial record instead of relying only on isolated photographs and verbal descriptions.

Advanced analysis of a crime or collision scene using a photogrammetry model

Enable Deeper Scene Analysis

Once the scene is reconstructed, trained personnel can return to the model to measure distances, areas and volumes, evaluate sight lines and export geospatial data into specialized forensic, reconstruction, CAD or GIS tools. The digital record supports new questions that may arise days, months or years after collection.

Objective photogrammetric documentation supporting review of a critical incident

Establish an Objective Spatial Baseline

Critical incidents demand careful, transparent documentation. A georeferenced model records the visible environment and documented evidence in a consistent coordinate framework. When paired with validated methods, quality-control records and qualified testimony, that spatial baseline can strengthen technical review and help separate measurement from interpretation.

Accuracy depends on the sensor, image quality, overlap, flight or capture geometry, scale, control, positioning method, processing settings and operator procedure. Agencies should validate each workflow against their mission requirements and applicable evidentiary standards.

Why PIX4D?

Built for Control, Flexibility and Defensible Geospatial Workflows

PIX4D gives public-safety teams a connected path from rapid field mapping and mobile ground capture to advanced desktop processing, quality review and controlled online collaboration.

Offline desktop photogrammetry processing for agency-controlled evidence handling

Agency-Controlled Desktop Processing

Products such as PIX4Dmatic, PIX4Dmapper and PIX4Dreact can process data locally. Agencies can build workflows in which sensitive imagery remains on an approved workstation or secure network rather than requiring upload for processing—an important option for evidence governance, connectivity and agency policy.

Fusion of drone imagery and terrestrial PIX4Dcatch data in one mapping workflow

Aerial and Ground Data in One Scene

Overhead imagery supplies broad context, but evidence may sit beneath vehicles, under tree cover, beside structures or indoors. PIX4Dcatch and compatible PIX4Dmatic workflows can combine terrestrial RGB and depth data with aerial projects, helping teams build a more complete model across multiple viewpoints.

Advanced control of photogrammetry calibration, ground control points and tie points

Control Beyond One-Click Processing

Advanced desktop tools provide access to calibration, coordinate systems, ground control points, checkpoints, manual tie points and processing parameters. That control helps trained forensic mappers inspect the reconstruction, refine challenging projects and explain how a result was produced.

PIX4Dreact creating rapid offline two-dimensional maps during emergency response

Rapid Offline Mapping at the Edge

PIX4Dreact is purpose-built to turn drone imagery into a current 2D orthomosaic on a field computer without depending on cloud access. Incident command can gain a common operating picture where cellular coverage, bandwidth or time is limited.

Detailed PIX4D processing quality report for photogrammetry project review

Transparent Quality Documentation

PIX4D quality reports expose project indicators such as image calibration, overlap, ground sample distance, geolocation behavior and control-point error. These records help operators identify weaknesses, document quality checks and explain the technical basis of a reconstruction.

Choose Local, Cloud or Hybrid Operations

PIX4D does not force every mission into one processing model. Teams can keep sensitive projects local, share approved deliverables through PIX4Dcloud or combine desktop control with cloud-based access for distributed stakeholders. The workflow can follow the mission and the agency’s data policy.

Need a complete forensic mapping program? MAXSUR can help define the capture standard, accuracy requirement, evidence-handling model, deliverables, software mix, training plan and validation process before equipment is purchased.

Complete the Capability

From Data Collection to Defensible Deliverables

Photogrammetry software is one part of the system. Select the aircraft, control, LiDAR and program components that match the size, environment, accuracy and response time of the mission.

Photogrammetry and LiDAR are complementary. Photogrammetry produces richly textured models from imagery; LiDAR directly measures range and can perform better around vegetation or surfaces with limited visual texture. Many advanced programs use both and bring the resulting data together in a common geospatial workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

PIX4D for Crime Scenes, Crash Reconstruction and Emergency Response

Can PIX4D process sensitive scene data without uploading it to the cloud?

Yes. Compatible desktop products—including PIX4Dmatic, PIX4Dmapper and PIX4Dreact—support local processing. This gives an agency the option to keep raw imagery and generated deliverables within an approved workstation or network. PIX4Dcloud is available when online processing or browser-based collaboration is appropriate and authorized.

Is drone photogrammetry accurate enough for forensic or collision work?

Photogrammetry can produce highly accurate, measurable results when the collection geometry, imagery, scale, control, positioning, processing and quality checks are appropriate for the application. Required accuracy should be defined before capture, verified with independent control or checkpoints when appropriate, and documented according to agency procedure.

Can PIX4D combine drone imagery with indoor or ground-level capture?

Yes. PIX4Dcatch supports mobile terrestrial capture, and compatible PIX4Dmatic workflows can process terrestrial RGB and supported depth data, merge projects and combine multiple viewpoints. Overlap, shared coordinates, targets, control and capture planning remain important when joining separate datasets.

When should an agency use PIX4Dreact instead of PIX4Dmatic?

PIX4Dreact is intended for fast 2D situational mapping when responders need a current orthomosaic quickly, often in the field and without internet service. PIX4Dmatic is the deeper desktop workflow for advanced photogrammetric processing, 3D reconstruction, large or terrestrial datasets, data fusion, quality review and professional geospatial outputs.

Does PIX4D replace LiDAR or a total station?

Not universally. Each measurement technology has strengths and limitations. Photogrammetry is efficient, scalable and visually rich; LiDAR directly measures range and may perform better in vegetation or on low-texture surfaces; a total station provides controlled discrete measurements. MAXSUR can help design a complementary workflow based on scene type, accuracy, speed and budget.

Can MAXSUR provide more than the PIX4D software?

Yes. MAXSUR can provide compatible drones, payloads, mobile capture equipment, RTK and mapping targets, LiDAR systems, processing workstations, software, operator training, workflow development and program support. The goal is a repeatable agency capability—not merely a collection of individual products.
